Phi Alpha Delta (ΦAΔ or PAD) is the largest co-ed professional law fraternity in the United States. Phi Alpha Delta’s members consist of many university students, law school students, lawyers, judges, and politicians. Founded in 1898, Phi Alpha Delta, International has over 300,000 members and counting; creating a service to the law community. The purpose of the UC-Irvine Chapter is to guide Pre-Law students with the common interests of professionalism and the study of law to better their futures.
Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity, UCI Chapter invited Christopher Guldjian and Frank Fasel to come out and speak about their involvement and experience with personal injury. This is their second time visiting the chapter and speaking about their experiences with law. Mr. Guldjian first introduced his story with how he began his career working at a large firm representing insurance companies in defense cases. He loved what he was doing, but believed he could be doing more to help people. This was his inspiration to get involved in the personal injury legal field. Mr. Guldjian not only talked about requirements for a case but also touched on the requirements to apply to law school and what law schools look for the most in an applicant. Frank Fasel is a partner with Mr. Guldjian. He practices both personal injury and business law. Mr. Fasel pursued the legal career because he believed in helping everyone. He chose personal injury because he believed that everyone deserves equal representation.
Even though a majority of the talk was about their practice, both Mr. Guldjian and Mr. Fasel explain that Law School is very important for a well-rounded legal education. Both also explained that the most important factors when applying for Law School is one’s Grade Point Average and LSAT score. We as students must keep expanding our minds in the world of law. Guldjian Law was more than happy to give prospective law school students advice about law school and their practice. This gave the students a chance to learn about two practices in the legal field.
One of the questions Mr. Guldjian received was, “Do you only focus on car accidents and slip and fall type of injury or do you do more?” His answer was no. Guldjian Law’s practice areas include assaults, bicycle accidents, crosswalk accidents, food poisoning, dog bites, and more. Most accidents are from everyday activities that we are used to. Sometimes we don’t think about opening a case when we fall in a restaurant because we sometimes think it is our fault. Mr. Guldjian and Mr. Fasel both explained that accidents do happen, and one must be treated fairly.
Mr. Guldjian and Mr. Fasel stated the most important steps into knowing one has a case are:
Everyone has some form of duty to uphold. For example, a defendant owes the plaintiff a duty of care. Breach of duty is when a defendant breaches the duty and causes the plaintiff’s injury. The result of that injury incurs damages which is when there is a settlement to pay off for those injuries.
